ATI x1300 and Ubuntu

I'm having problems running Ubuntu Edgy with a new Dell Optiplex 745 with an ATI x1300 (RV 516 7183) video card. 2D works great but 3D is borked. When running fglrxinfo I get:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6234 (8.32.5)

but when I run fgl_glxgears I get this window and a listing of FPS
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
3933 frames in 5.0 seconds = 786.600 FPS
4462 frames in 5.0 seconds = 892.400 FPS
4483 frames in 5.0 seconds = 896.600 FPS

Update: I was able to get the ATI card to work when ATI corrected their driver in version 8.33.6.

  1. Have you found a solution to this problem ? I have been having exactly the same one for months now. My machine: Optiplex 745 with ATI X1300pro 256Mb. OS: Mandriva 2007 (but I had the same problem on on Suse and Kubuntu). I tried all recent drivers from ATI.

I guess the problem is Dell-related, see http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?p=1334634219 ; I also posted on Dell's Linux-Desktop list (http://lists.us.dell.com/pipermail/linux-desktops/2006-December/thread.html), but nothing useful up to now (except finding other people with the same problem).

It might be a bios issue as 1) the mtrr registers are completely screwed up (try a cat /proc/mtrr), and 2) applying running firmwarekit (http://www.linuxfirmwarekit.org/download.php) shows that the bios is very buggy.

    Quite annoying...
