{"id":2277,"date":"2013-06-24T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-24T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.causevox.com\/?p=2277"},"modified":"2024-05-08T17:47:33","modified_gmt":"2024-05-08T17:47:33","slug":"fundraising-appeals-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.causevox.com\/blog\/fundraising-appeals-men\/","title":{"rendered":"Should You Simplify Your Fundraising Message for Men?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2288\" title=\"old-spice-man-nonprofit-marketing\" src=\"https:\/\/causevox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/old-spice-man-nonprofit-marketing.jpg\" alt=\"Old Spice Man\" width=\"510\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, a stereotype has some truth in it.\u00a0 In this case, the stereotype that men prefer simple messages over more complicated and detailed ones may have legs.<\/p>\n<p>(Don\u2019t attack us just yet!\u00a0 We\u2019re certainly not saying that men are dumb.\u00a0 The author of this post is a man, and we wouldn\u2019t allow that kind of argument-baiting nonsense on our blog.)<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, the source, in this case, is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2008\/03\/080303120346.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> performed by Northwestern University and the University of Haifa.\u00a0 Researchers leading the study measured the brain activity of boys and girls performing certain spelling and writing tasks.\u00a0 They found that \u201c[G]irls \u2026 showed significantly greater activation in language areas of the brain than boys.\u201d The researchers theorized that boys may have, \u201c[S]ome kind of bottleneck in their sensory processes that can hold up visual or auditory information and keep it from being fed into the language areas of the brain,&#8221; but speculated that this situation may clear up as boys reach adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, it may be beneficial to attempt to simplify your messaging in order to increase the likelihood that your audience will act on it.\u00a0 And in general, this is good advice no matter what type of audience you\u2019re addressing.\u00a0 A simple message, especially with strong visuals, tends to be a more effective one in many cases (more details on this <a href=\"https:\/\/billiondollargraphics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>While we often promote the power of storytelling in this blog, there is a time and a place for it.\u00a0 But if you want people (especially men) to take action, it pays to get to the point.\u00a0 What does this mean for your fundraising materials?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Favor brief emails<\/li>\n<li>Create ads that aren\u2019t text-heavy<\/li>\n<li>Employ short videos to get your message across<\/li>\n<li>And on Twitter \u2026 actually, don\u2019t change a thing on Twitter; they have the right idea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If people are interested in hearing more details, make them available after a click.\u00a0 Tell long-form stories on a separate page, layout complex plans in a standalone presentation, and break down organizational challenges in an easy-to-read format.\u00a0 That way, your audience gets exactly as much information as they want, and only when they want it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s something a person of any gender can appreciate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, a stereotype has some truth in it.\u00a0 In this case, the stereotype that men prefer simple messages over more complicated and detailed ones may have legs.
