{"id":1699,"date":"2012-11-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-11-05T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.causevox.com\/?p=1699"},"modified":"2024-05-09T16:53:45","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T16:53:45","slug":"should-your-nonprofit-invest-in-twitter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.causevox.com\/blog\/should-your-nonprofit-invest-in-twitter\/","title":{"rendered":"Should Your Nonprofit Invest in Twitter?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.causevox.com\/assets\/twitter-bird-blue-on-white.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1702 alignnone\" title=\"twitter-bird-blue-on-white\" src=\"https:\/\/causevox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/twitter-bird-blue-on-white.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"210\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notice we didn\u2019t ask whether you should <em>use<\/em> Twitter.&nbsp; You probably should.&nbsp; But the amount of time and resources you invest in Twitter is an open question that depends on your organization\u2019s goals.&nbsp; Before you go \u201c#ALL_IN\u201d on Twitter, you need to consider who you\u2019re trying to reach.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, Brian Solis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.briansolis.com\/2012\/07\/finally-a-look-at-the-people-who-use-twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has shared<\/a> some very illuminating data on the matter.&nbsp; Here are some notable points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>15% of all Internet users visit Twitter.&nbsp; This percentage has doubled since 2010, and includes a userbase of over 500 million people (and bots).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Twitter is most popular with the under-30 set.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now things start to get interesting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Of all education levels, Twitter is most popular with those without high school diplomas, of whom 22% use Twitter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Twitter\u2019s racial makeup is disproportionately African-American, as almost a third of African-Americans who use the Internet use Twitter (compared to 12% for Caucasian).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Of Internet users 18-24, over a fifth are using Twitter from their phone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.causevox.com\/assets\/twitter-demo.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1700\" title=\"twitter demo\" src=\"https:\/\/causevox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/twitter-demo.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"733\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>And, unsurprisingly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Residents of rural areas have a lower participation rate than those from urban and suburban areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, if you want to fundraise from old farmers (don\u2019t giggle, their net worth might surprise you), you need to hit \u201cthem there dusty backroads\u201d or send a message via snail mail.&nbsp; If, however, you want to reach out to urban youth, you need to get hashtaggin\u2019, yo.<\/p>\n<p>Cultivate a robust presence on Twitter by sharing relevant info, responding and following influential Tweeters in your issue area, and welcoming followers.&nbsp; Get a campaign trending virally, and your yearly fundraising goal could be met in a day!<\/p>\n<p>Hit us up at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitter.com\/causevox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@causevox<\/a>, and we\u2019ll help you get the ball rolling.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Notice we didn\u2019t ask whether you should use Twitter.&nbsp; You probably should.&nbsp; But the amount of time and resources you invest in Twitter is an open question that depends on your organization\u2019s goals.&nbsp; Before you go \u201c#ALL_IN\u201d on Twitter, you need to consider who you\u2019re trying to reach.
