I’m currently producing, co-hosting, and editing four different podcasts. I want to reinforce the necessity of commitment when considering creating a podcast series. Don’t jump in with high hopes and naive expectations that it’ll ‘all work out.’ Be sure you understand what’s involved in both the time and technical aspects. Take ownership of your communications.

Put pen (or pencil) to paper and write out all you want to accomplish with your podcast. Pencil out how you plan to acheive your expectations. List (at least) the first five subjects you wish to cover. Then get to it! You’ll find it’s actually a fun and satisfying way to communicate with your supporters.

Finally, as a producer, let me say these two things are paramount to your continued success in podcasting. Quality and consistency. First; Quality audio (don’t cheap out on gear), and production values. Listen to NPR’s podcasts for inspiration. Second; Consistency to build anticipation and expectation in your audience. 80+ years of radio and television programming has trained the public to expect their ‘shows’ at the same time/day and on the same channel. Ignore quality and consistency at your peril.

Now, get podcasting!
